Canada Permanent Residency

Express Entry Program

The EES is a Canadian immigration program that was introduced in January 2015. It is designed to help facilitate the process of selecting and admitting skilled workers into Canada. The program is managed by the federal government of Canada and is used to select candidates for three different economic immigration categories: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.

The Express Entry System (EES) is an online immigration application management system introduced by the Government of Canada in January 2015. It is the main pathway for skilled workers who want to immigrate to Canada permanently. Instead of processing applications in the traditional first-come, first-served method, Express Entry uses a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to assess, score, and rank candidates in the pool. Those with the highest scores are invited to apply for permanent residence.

The Express Entry System manages applications for three major economic immigration programs:

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) — for individuals with foreign work experience who meet certain education, language ability, and skilled work criteria.

  2. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) — for qualified tradespeople with work experience in specific occupations, such as construction, electrical work, or industrial trades.

  3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) — for individuals who already have skilled work experience in Canada, such as international graduates or temporary foreign workers.

Eligibility

To qualify for Express Entry, you must meet the criteria for one of the three federal programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): Requires at least one year of continuous full-time skilled work experience (or equivalent part-time) in the past 10 years, language proficiency, and a minimum of 67 points on six selection factors: age, education, work experience, language skills and adaptability.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): Requires a valid job offer of at least one year or a certificate of qualification in a skilled trade issued by a Canadian authority, and language proficiency (CLB 5 for speaking and listening, CLB 4 for reading and writing).
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): Requires at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the last three years and language proficiency.

All candidates must be admissible to Canada (no criminal or medical issues) and plan to live outside Quebec, which has its own immigration system. An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is required for foreign education credentials.

Application Process

The Express Entry process involves several steps:

  1. Check Eligibility: Confirm you meet the requirements for FSWP, FSTP, or CEC using tools like the Come to Canada tool.
  2. Create a Profile: Submit an online profile via the IRCC website, including details on education, work experience, language test results (e.g., IELTS, CELPIP, or PTE), and other factors.
  3. Receive a CRS Score: Your profile is assigned a CRS score out of 1,200 points based on your qualifications.
  4. Enter the Pool: Your profile joins the Express Entry pool, where it’s ranked against others.
  5. Wait for an ITA: IRCC conducts draws every two weeks, issuing ITAs to the highest-scoring candidates.
  6. Submit Application: If you receive an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete permanent residency application, including documents like police certificates, medical exams, and proof of funds.

Processing typically takes six months for complete applications. Our consultants can guide you to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

Benefits of Express Entry

Express Entry offers several advantages:

  • Fast Processing: Most applications are processed within six months.
  • Path to Citizenship: Permanent residents can apply for citizenship after three years of residency.
  • Family Inclusion: Include your spouse and dependent children in your application.
  • Social Benefits: Access Canada’s healthcare, education, and social services.
  • Flexibility: Live and work anywhere in Canada, except Quebec, with a provincial nomination providing 600 CRS points.

Express Entry in 2025

In 2025, Express Entry continues to evolve with category-based draws targeting healthcare, education, trades, and French language proficiency to address labor shortages. A new education category supports teachers and educators. Stay updated via our blog (if available) for the latest draw information and CRS cut-off scores.

how the Express Entry process works:

  • Step 1: Eligible candidates create an online Express Entry profile and submit details about their skills, work experience, education, language ability (English and/or French), and other factors.

  • Step 2: They are given a CRS score out of 1200 points. Factors like age, education, work experience, language skills, and job offers can significantly influence the score.

  • Step 3: Candidates are placed in the Express Entry pool. Regular draws (usually every two weeks) invite the highest-scoring candidates to apply for permanent residence.

  • Step 4: Once invited, candidates have 60 days to submit a complete application, after which the federal government aims to process it within six months.

Candidates can also improve their CRS score after entering the pool by, for example, getting a better language test score, completing additional education, or obtaining a valid job offer or a provincial nomination (which gives an automatic 600 CRS points).

Express Entry has made Canadian immigration faster, more efficient, and more merit-based, allowing Canada to better select skilled immigrants who are likely to succeed economically and integrate quickly into Canadian society.
